To control the overcharging by the private hospitals for treating COVID-19 cases, a central government committee had suggested a cap on charges required by private hospitals in Delhi, in effect proposing treatment charges to be slashed to about one-third of the current treatment charge.
In a recent tweet, the DDMA approved recommendations of the Union Committee for fixing subsidised rates for COVID-19 treatment in Delhi’s private hospitals. The panel has recommended Rs 8000-10000, 13000-15000 and 15000-18000 including PPE costs for isolation bed, ICUs without and with ventilator respectively as against the current charges of Rs 24000-25000, 34000-43000 and 44000-54000 for the same categories of treatment.
Last week, the Supreme Court had blasted the Arvind Kejriwal government over its handling of the pandemic, calling the situation in the city “horrendous, horrific and pathetic”. “Patients are running from pillar to post to get admitted while large numbers of beds are vacant.
On 14th June, after meeting Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and LG Anil Baijal, Amit Shah had announced a slew of measures to improve the COVID-19 situation in Delhi and among the announcement he made was the decision that private hospitals will have to be reserved 60 per cent covid-19 beds for subsidised treatment.
