Who is not a fan of the supernatural comedy franchise Ghostbusters? The first instalment of the franchise ‘Ghostbusters’, directed by Ivan Reitman, released in 1984 and received critical acclaim. It transcended into a cultural phenomenon. It was extremely well received for its blend of comedy, action and horror.
Bill Murray, who played ‘Peter Venkman’ in the film, was widely praised for his performance in the film. After the phenomenal success of the 1984 released film, Columbia Pictures wanted a sequel, which resulted in the making of ‘Ghostbusters 2’, which was released in 1989, to generally negative reviews and did not perform well on the box office as well.
The franchise’s third instalment ‘Ghostbusters: Answer the Call’, released in 2016, and saw a change of director, with ‘Paul Feig’ helming the ship. The narrative of the film shifted genders, and it was lead by women in lead roles. But the film failed to make a huge impact on the box office.
Now, for the fourth film of the franchise, Ivan Reitman, passed the baton to his son Jason Reitman, who is an accomplished director in his own right, having directed brilliant films like ‘Thank You For Smoking’, ‘Juno’, ‘Up in the Air’ and ‘Young Adult’.
He co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan.)The release of ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ sequel to ‘Ghostbusters (1984)’ and ‘Ghostbusters 2(1989)’ has been delayed three times, from an original July 2020 to March 5th 2021, then again to June 11th 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film is finally slated to release on November 11th, 2021 in IMAX and Dolby Cinema.
