On Sunday, The Mumbai police issued advisory warning netizens and social media-users of strict action if they circulate fake news, rumours, misinformation regarding coronavirus outbreak.
The advisory stated that such content can create panic among people, and foment mistrust towards government functionaries trying to curb the outbreak, an official said.
“All persons designated as admin on messaging and social media platforms shall be held responsible for any such information being disseminated in a group administered by them,” the official said.
From Monday, the diktat will come into force and violators will be booked under section 188 of IPC for insubordination to an official order, he added.
