Sedition Charges are filed against former JNU student Sharjeel Imam, police claims that his speech ‘instigated riots’

The Delhi Police has sedition charges against former JNU student name Sharjeel Imam. Delhi Police says that his speech had promoted enmity between people that after led to riots. It is happened around Delhi’s Jamia Islamia University on 15th December. Police has filed charge sheet against Sharjeel Imam in the Saket district court in Delhi.

The Delhi Police said that on 15th December last year, riots were broke where Jamia Millia Islamia Univeristy’s students did protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). It is also said that, riots were broke at two places which New Friends Colony and Jamia Nagar areas and this both are adjacent to the university in Delhi.

The Delhi Police said that, Sharjeel Imam was arrested based on “instigating and abetting riots” in Delhi, due to his “seditious speech delivered on December 13th 2019 last year”.

“Stone pelting and arson and in the process destroyed many public and private properties in the country. Cases of rioting, arson and damage of public properties cases were registered. Many policemen and rioters were injured un this riots” the Delhi Police said.

“During investigation, on the basis of evidence collected against Sharjeel Imam, section 124 A IPC and 153 A IPC (sedition and promoting enmity between people) were invoked in the cases. The first charge sheet were filed against this rioters and it is arrested by the SIT led by Rajesh Deo. This charge sheet is filed in the Saket court in Delhi. Further investigation will be continued” the Delhi Police said.

Imam was arrested from Bihar’s Jehanabad on January 28. Multiple cases were filled against Sharjeel Imam after his speech against government at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) camous on January 16th.

Sharjeel Imam had involved in organizing the protest at Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh, but he came into limelight after a video clip went viral where it is clearly seen Sharjeel Imam making a controversial statement against government regarding Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), following which he was booked under sedition charges.

In that video clip Sharjeel Imam said “If we all come together, we can separate the northeast from India. If we cannot do it permanently, then atleast 1-2 months we can do this. It will take the administration at least one month to disperse all of them”

Delhi Police said that Sharjeel Imam had given “provocative” speech on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus and after that he got logged an FIR in the national capital.

This is not the only case of Sharjeel Imam, there’s another case was filed against him under the stringent anti-terror law in Assam.

Police in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh had also lodged a case against him, over his speech in which he threatened to “Assam should be cut off from the rest of the country” Assam and other northeast from the rest of the country.

On December 15th 2019, the Jamia Millia Islamia attack refers to forceful entry of Delhi Police into the Jamia Miliia Islamia University. Thousands of people were protested infront of Police headquarters immediately after the attack.

Several protests have come from various parts of the country ever since central government passed act, which grants Indian Citizenship to refugees belonging to the Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi and Jain communities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
