The top infectious disease expert in the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci said the country might be ready to start reopening gradually next month. The president of the United States Donald Trump announced that he was creating a council focused on reopening the country. When addressing the country the President added “I want to get it open as soon as possible. This country was meant to be open and vibrant and great”. The president’s decision to reopen the country soon has been received with uncertainty from health expert and economists.
The country is currently undergoing a lockdown which has helped to curb the spread of the infection. The country which currently has the highest death told arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, with its states like New York and New Jersey having very high infections and deaths. The decisions to lift the lockdown and restrictions will come from the country’s mayors and governors as they are responsible for imposing the measures in the first place. The country has been recording about 2,000 deaths everyday from the pandemic.
The World Health Organization has warned that lifting the restrictions prematurely could bring up a “deadly resurgence” from the virus. The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who advised against lifting the restrictions soon said “I know that some countries are already planning the transition out of stay at home restrictions”, adding that “At an equivalent time, lifting restrictions too quickly could lead on to a deadly resurgence”.
The country which is supposed to have its next election in November has been having a hard time conducting campaigns because of the restrictions. Dr. Andrew Fauci when having a conversation with CNN said “We are hoping by the end of the month we can look around and say, okay, is there any element here that we will safely and cautiously start pulling back on”. Mayors and governors from around the country and even Dr. Fauci said that widespread testing could be the most important to relaxing restrictions.
