Every year Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s Jayanti is celebrated on May 14. He was the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji and his first wife Saibai. His mother passed away when he was just two and was thus brought up by his grandmother Jijabai. After Chhatrapati Shivaji died, he took over the Maratha kingdom and ruled for the next nine years. The Mughals then captured the area and succumbed him to death in 1689. His brother Rajaram I succeeded to the throne then.
On May 14, 1657 this braveheart of the country took birth and every year we commemorate this day for his exemplary heroism. He was the protector of Dharma. Despite being tortured for 40 days, he did not give up his Dharma.
