White House clarifies the reason for first following and then unfollowing PM Modi on Twitter

The White House clarified why it’s Twitter handle ‘unfollowed’ the Tweeter handles of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Indian Embassy within the US, the US Embassy in India and therefore the US Ambassador to India, Ken Juster.

White House elucidated the reason behind unfollowing the Tweeter accounts that it follows the handle of officials from host countries during a presidential trip for a short period of time to retweet their messages in support of the visit.

During the visit of American president Donald Trump to India in the last week of February, the official Twitter account of the White House (@WhiteHouse) had started ‘following’ the accounts of President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister’s office, the Indian Embassy in the U.S., the U.S. Embassy in India and the U.S. Ambassador to India, Ken Juster.
The White House ‘unfollowed’ all the six Twitter handles early this week.

As per the explanation of senior administration, “The White House Twitter account normally follows senior US government Twitter accounts, and others as appropriate. For example, during the time of a presidential visit, the account typically follows for a brief time, the host country’s officials to retweet their messages in support of the visit”.
The official was responding to a question on the reasons behind the White House ‘following’ and then ‘unfollowing’ the Twitter handles of President Kovind, Prime Minister Modi, the PMO and the other Indian officials.

The action of unfollowing’ the Twitter handles of President Kovind and PM Modi by The White House has drawn reactions and invited the social uproar on social media in India.
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his disappointment on this action by saying that he was “dismayed” at the development.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “I’m dismayed by the “unfollowing” of our President & PM by the White House. I urge the Ministry of External Affairs to require note”.
The White House had 22 million followers on Wednesday.

It has been customary following 13 accounts comprising of President Donald Trump and his official Twitter accounts, the primary Lady, the vice-chairman, the Second Lady, the new Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, the National Security Council and the former White House Press Secretary, Stephanie Grisham, amongst others.
