WHO experts warning

On 11 March 2020, WHO declared Novel Coronavirus Disease outbreak as a pandemic for countries to take immediate actions. In a video conference held on 15 April 2020, Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare said, “ WHO is an important partner in our fight against the Covid-19. I really value guidance and contributions made by the WHO in containing the spread of Covid-19 across the country.

According to WHO expert Michael Ryan, the doubling time of the coronavirus cases in India is about three weeks at this stage. Ryan said the disease has not exploded in India, but it is kind of a risk to unlock the states. Ryan noted that measures taken in India such as nationwide lockdown had an impact in slowing the coronavirus cases, open up and as people begin to move again from here and there, there’s always a risk of the disease bouncing back up.

He stated that due to the dense population and poverty in the country many workers have no choice but to go to work every day. There is a big risk in opening the country. Covid-19 not ‘exploded’ in India but the risk remains. India went past to become the sixth worst-hit nation by the Covid-19 pandemic.

WHO’S advice

WHO had advised wearing masks while stepping out from home. They said that face masks should be worn in public areas where social distancing is not possible to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Those aged over 70 and with health risks should wear medical masks in public areas and while communicating to someone. They advise people to only step out of the house if necessary. The people should maintain a 1-inch distance from others while talking, sitting or standing.

Conclusion

Covid-19 pandemic cases have been increasing day by day in India because of unlocking the nation but somewhere it was also necessary to unlock it because there was no way left for the public to get money and to return to their respective works. Still, the containment areas will continue the lockdown till 30 June.
