Wipro Promises Rs 1125 crore To Address COVID-19 Efforts

Wipro (formerly Western India Palm Refined Oil Limited) is an Indian multinational corporation that provides information technology, consulting and business process services. It has its headquarters in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
Wipro Limited specializes in information technology and computer related technologies. The Group’s services encompass a number of areas, including software architecture, business intelligence systems, e-commerce, data warehousing, internet access devices, network management, system administration, messaging systems, IT consulting and design. Wipro also has a presence in niche markets of consumer products.

Wipro Limited is a global information technology, consulting and outsourcing company. The company develops and integrates solutions that enable clients to leverage information technology (IT) in achieving their business objectives at competitive costs. It operates through the information technology services and information technology products segments. The Information Technology Services segment provides IT and IT- enabled services which include IT consulting, custom application design, re-engineering and development.
In 2013, Wipro separated it’s non-IT businesses and formed the privately owned Wipro Enterprises.

The company was incorporated on 29 December 1945 in Amalner, Maharashtra by Muhammed Premji as ” Western India Palm Refined Oil Limited”,later abbreviated to ” Wipro”. It was initially set up as a manufacturer of vegetable and refined oils in Amalner, Maharashtra, British India under the trade names of Kisan, Sunflower and Camel.
In 1966, after Muhamed Premji’s death, his son Azim Premji took over Wipro as it’s chairman at the age of 21.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the company shifted it’s focus to new opportunities in the IT and computing industry, which was at a nascent stage in India at that time. On 7 June, 1977, the name of the company changed from Western India Vegetable Products Limited to Wipro Products Limited. In 1982, the name was changed again from Wipro Products Limited to Wipro Limited. Wipro continued to expand in the consumer products domain with the launch of “Ralak” a Tulsi based family soap and “Wipro Jasmine”, a toilet soap.
Up till date, Wipro has continued to expand it’s devices by setting up different business opportunities and getting into partnership with different companies.

In 2019, Wipro consumer care and the Ang-Hortaleza Corporation signed a share purchase agreement for the sale of 100% of the latter’s stake in the personal care business of Splash Corporation. Wipro partnered with Mogosoft , a AlOps company.
In February 2020, Wipro acquired Rational Interaction, a Seattle-based digital consumer experience consultancy.

Wipro was ranked 1st in the 2010 Asian Sustainability Rating (ASR) of Indian companies and is a member of NASDAQ Global Sustainability Index as well as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In November 2012 Guide to Greener Electronics, Greenpeace ranked Wipro first with a score of 7.1/10.

Azim Premji Foundation Wipro and Wipro Enterprises together have committed an aid of RS. 1125 crore for tacking the unprecedented health and humanitarian crisis arising from the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

These resources will help enable the dedicated medical and service fraternity in the Frontline of the battle against the pandemic and in mitigating it’s wide ranging human impact, particularly on the most disadvantaged sector of our society, said a statement from Wipro and Azim Premji Foundation.

The foundation has already set up a district response plan for COVID-19, with the help of its partners.
Of the RS. 1125 crore, Wipro’s commitment is RS 25crore, the Azim Premji Foundation is giving RS 1000crore. These aims in addition to the annual CSR activities of Wipro, and the usual philanthropic spends of the Azim Premji Foundation.

Wipro said it would facilitate a comprehensive on-the-ground response in specific geographies,focused on immediate humanitarian aid, scaling up healthcare facilities including containing the coronavirus outbreak and treating the affected ones.
These responses will be carefully coordinated with relevant government intsititions and would be executed by the Azim Premji Foundation’s 1600 person team, in collaboration with many of its more than 350-people strong civil society partners across the country. These efforts will fit leverage the technology expertise, sourcing systems, infrastructure and distribution reach of Wipro.
