With scenes of Marvyn Korn (John Stamos) driving his car among palm trees and next to the ocean, Marvyn Korn (John Stamos) is coaching a big game for the University of Wisconsin.
During the basketball scenes, Korn goes off on a ref and throws a chair onto the court in protest of a call, which hits one of the officials. Marvyn Korn loses his job at Wisconsin after the chair-throwing incident, and the legendary coach can’t even get a college job, despite his record number of wins and multiple national championships.
His reputation as a jerk who mistreats his players has finally caught up with him. When his agent (Adam Arkin) informs him of a new job, he is disappointed to learn that it is a high school job in La Jolla, California. At an all-girls high school. With his agent’s approval, he reluctantly accepts the job.
As he learns in his first meeting with Westbrook principal Sherilyn Thomas (Yvette Nicole Brown), bringing him in was the idea of the school’s biggest booster, Larry Gruzinsky (Michael Trucco), who wanted to help his daughter Louise (Nell Verlaque), the team’s best player, get a Division I scholarship. When he first meets assistant coach Holly Barrett (Jessalyn Gilsig), she advises him to be as honest as possible with the team’s female members.
So he tells them things like, “If I yell at you, don’t take it personally,” and “Ignore it if I call you stupid; however, if I tell you why you’re being stupid, you’d better pay attention.” He tells Destiny (Tiana Le), a power forward, to lose five pounds. He then suspends Louise from the team after she shows him up by chewing gum and talking back. Of course, he faces immediate opposition from everyone from Principal Thomas to Louise’s father to the other girls on the team.
However, in the weeks leading up to the next game, Marvyn begins to gain the trust of a few of the girls, including the chatty Carolyn “Mouse” Smith (Tisha Custodio), who believes he will help them win. He apologizes to Destiny, explaining that he doesn’t look at weight, but rather positions and conditioning; she simply calls him bully. He loosens up on Louise after a few beers with Holly, who advises him that high school girls are so different to coach than college men, especially after she tells him through tears that she just wants to make her father proud of her.
