Future American drama limited series Painkiller was developed by Micah Fitzerman Blue and Noah Harpster for Netflix. The six-episode series which is based on Patrick Radden Keefe’s “The Family Built an Empire of Pain” in the New Yorker and Barry Meire’s book Pain Killer: An Empire of Deceit and the Origin of America’s Opioid Epidemic concentrates on the beginning of the opioid crisis of the with the focus on Purdue Pharma, the producer of OxyContin.
Netflix will launch Pain Killer on 10 August 2023. Numerous approaches can be used to combat the opioid crisis. Even though the story has been given some artistic license, “Painkiller” adopts a profoundly human and historical perspective. According to a press release from Netflix, “Painkiller is a scripted limited series that explores some of the origins and aftermath of the opioid crisis in America, highlighting the stories of the perpetrators, victims, and truth seekers whose lives are forever altered by the invention of OxyContin. “Another intriguing aspect of the series’ approach to Tudum was revealed by executive producer Eric Newman: He stated, “We wanted to mirror the effects of opioids.”
In his words, “the warmth and the hope and the relief of taking a pill that’s going to deliver you from your suffering and the watching it become suffering.”
“Painkiller” will focus on the lives of the significant Sackler family members and the crucial role their dynasty played in funding the development and popularization of the drugs by the pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma, despite being semi-fictionalized. Edie, a fictitious investigator who seeks to reveal the truth about the family’s crimes, will also be followed.
Amazingly, “Painkiller is ready to examine a fresh aspect of the epidemic through these memorable characters: the introduction of these drugs into the world of conventional medicine. Here, shady boardroom discussions and covert interviews will be on display, but so will protests led by cheery salespeople who insist that these medications are reliable and safe. The series’ plot is based on two non-fiction works: the book “Painkiller: A Wonder Drug’s Trail of Addiction and Death” by former New York Times reporter Barry Meier and Patrick Radden Keefe’s lengthy 2017 piece for the New Yorker,” The Family That Built the Empire Of Pain.” Meier is listed as a consulting producer, with Radden Keefe acting as executive producer.
