With the Screenlife format popularized by films like Searching and Unfriended, Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) has developed a nice little business for himself, and now there’s a trailer for his new directorial effort, Profile, which he helmed back in 2018.
The profile follows a British journalist (Valene Kane) as she goes undercover to bait and exposes a terrorist recruiter (Shazad Latif) via social media while avoiding becoming a radical extremist herself. The odd thriller takes place entirely on a computer screen, and the story tends to lend itself well to the Screenlife style, as the journalist and the terrorist interact through FaceTime to communicate she also uses Google Translate to speak his language and win his confidence, as seen below.
Timur-Bekmambetov-profile-trailer-screen life-thriller Storm Reid, who played Euphoria in the ‘Searching’ sequel, is in talks to play the lead in a screen life thriller. Profile was directed by Bekmambetov, who also co-wrote the script with Britt Poulton and Olga Kharina.
The film, which will be released in theatres on May 14 by Focus Features, was also produced by Bekmambetov and Karina. Sure, Profile has been sitting on a shelf for years, awaiting a U.S. release after its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2018, but I think it looks pretty damn good, and I like how Bekmambetov is utilizing the Screenlife format. This one appears to be one-of-a-kind, and I’m looking forward to seeing it for myself.
