Ayan was born in Kolkata, India to a Bengali Hindu family. They are the son of a Bengali film actor ‘Deb Mukherjee’. His family was immersed in the Indian film industry since 1930 when his grandfather, Sashadhar Mukherjee first stepped into this area by coincidence. Sashadhar Mukherjee was a leading film producer. They were one of the founding, partners of filmistan studio in Mumbai, and he produced films like Dil Deke Dekho(1959), Love In Shimla (1960), Ek Musafir Ek Hasina (1962), and Leader (1964), the studio is still run by Ayan’s extended family.
Ayan’s grandmother, Satidevi Mukherjee, was the wife of Sashadhar Mukherjee and sister of leading actor Ashok Kumar. Ayan’s grandfather’s brother was a film producer Prabodh Mukherjee, a director Subodh Mukherjee and an actress Rani Mukherjee’s grandfather Ravindra Mohan Mukherjee.
