Actress Mallika Sherawat, born Reema Lamba, told Bollywood Bubble that she changed her name after her father said, “She will enter the film industry, she will ruin the family name, I disown you.” She added, “I told him that I disown your name.” She further said, “So I used Sherawat, it’s my mother’s name.”
Mallika Sherawat hasn’t had it easy in the Hindi film industry. Like many celebrities, Mallika has been through ups and downs in her career. But even before she joined films, Mallika had to face judgments from her own father. For the unaware, Mallika ran away from home to fulfil her dream to be in Bollywood. However, the actress’ father was of the opinion that she would tarnish the image of her family if she enters the Hindi film industry.
In a recent interview, Malika, who was born Reema Lamba, revealed the reason why she changed her name when she made her acting debut.
“It was my rebellion against patriarchy because my father said ‘she will enter the film industry, she will ruin the family name, I disown you,” Mallika told Bollywood Bubble while adding that she told her father that she will disown his name and use her mother’s name.
“I told him that I disown your name. Yes, you’re my dad, I respect you, I love you but I’ll use my mother’s name. So I used Sherawat, it’s my mother’s name,” added Mallika. The actress further mentioned that her equation with her family is still not the best but ‘with age, everyone softens‘, she said.
