The real name of Gangubai Kathiawadi was Ganga Harjeevandas Kathiawadi. She was born in 1939 in a well-to-do family in Kathiawar, Gujarat. Her family members were associated with advocacy.

Gangubai may have been a kothewali, even though she was famous as a don, but she took many such positive steps which later became an example. Gangubai worked for the protection of sex workers, orphans and girls who were brought to the shelter by fraud.

Gangubai did not keep any woman who does not want to do prostitution. Without the permission of the woman, she could not be coerced into the house. Not only this, the girls who would have reached the place by deception like Gangubai, also tried to send them back to their homes. Gangubai Kathiawadi started raising their voice for the safety of women. Worked for orphan children.

Gangubai participated in the domestic elections held in Kamathipura and won. She also once met Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In those days, Nehruji was greatly influenced by Gangubai’s work and personality.
