These days Alia Bhatt is in discussion for her upcoming film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi‘. Her strong looks and role have been appreciated only with the release of the teaser of the film but the role of Gangubai Kathiawadi in which Alia Bhatt is seen is not a fictional character. The question in the mind of many people may be that who is Gangubai Kathiawadi after all, in whose life a film was even made? Gangubai Kathiawadi was associated with the profession of prostitution. Used to run a kotha in Mumbai but her acquaintance is not limited to this only. Gangubai Kathiawadi may have gotten into prostitution by profession due to the situation, but the work she did for women and children became an example. Gangubai Kathiawadi took big steps for sex workers.
The real name of Gangubai Kathiawadi was Ganga Harjeevandas Kathiawadi. She was born in 1939 in a well-to-do family in Kathiawar, Gujarat. Her family members were associated with advocacy.
Gangubai may have been a kothewali, even though she was famous as a don, but she took many such positive steps which later became an example. Gangubai worked for the protection of sex workers, orphans and girls who were brought to the shelter by fraud.
Gangubai did not keep any woman who does not want to do prostitution. Without the permission of the woman, she could not be coerced into the house. Not only this, the girls who would have reached the place by deception like Gangubai, also tried to send them back to their homes. Gangubai Kathiawadi started raising their voice for the safety of women. Worked for orphan children.
Gangubai participated in the domestic elections held in Kamathipura and won. She also once met Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In those days, Nehruji was greatly influenced by Gangubai’s work and personality.
