Tamil Nadu Police lathi-charged protestors protesting against the opening of liquor shops

Tamil Nadu Police on Friday did lathi-charge on over 100 women members of the Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM), who were protesting against the reopening of the liquor shops amid coronavirus outbreak who themselves were maintaining little social distancing.

Madurai witnessed the highest liquor sales in Tamil Nadu on the first day of reopening. Liquor worth Rs 46.78 crore was sold in Madurai alone.

The protesters were of the view that the opening of Tasmac shops will lead to further spread of Covid-19 disease besides it being a waste of the money. A similar protest was done in Trichy as well.

Besides the protest by women, political parties like Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi or Liberation Panther Party, CPM and Makkal Needhi Maiam have been opposing the move.
