Stranded non-resident Indians won’t lose the NRI status, No need to file returns in India says, Financial Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave the order to the Income Tax department to make an anomaly for Non-Indian resident or people who stuck here because of Covid-19 and delaying of International Flights.

Indians who are living abroad are not treated as a resident for Income Tax by Income tax department layout as they spent less than 120 days in India.

There are some NRIs who are stuck here because of coronavirus pandemic and they stay here more than 120 days and they are also facing problems here related to staying.
Financial Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s official said that they received many problems related to people stuck here in India and delaying of International flights they are afraid that they have to pay tax as an Indian resident. Finance Minister declared that they don’t have to pay any tax as they are stuck here.

The Finance Minister said that it is not clear when people who are stuck here are allowed to go back to their countries, Central Board of Direct Taxes has issued an order that this extended staying in India would not be counted to determine the resident status for the financial year 2020-21.
