Music maestro AR Rahman said that he has composed the soundtrack for filmmaker Aanand L Rai’s upcoming film “Atrangi Re” keeping in mind the on-screen and off-screen personalities of the lead actors.

The romantic-musical drama written by Rai’s longtime collaborator Himanshu Sharma stars Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan in the lead roles. Akshay Kumar is in a special role.

At the music launch of “Atrangi Re“, when Rahman was asked if he keeps actors in mind while working on the film’s soundtrack, the composer replied, “Yes.” “Because I am working very closely with a director and he (Rai) keeps talking about actors like Dhanush, Sara and Akshay Kumar do. He told me that Akshay has a collection of songs and I felt that there is so much competition and I need to make something good because he has so many options.

“Then the song came with Akshay in mind. Dhanush’s song comes from how he mixes some English, Hindi and Tamil. We had a song for Dhanush. It was a tough one. The way Sara dances, we had to give her a dance song, which is ‘Chaka Chak’.

Giving credit to Rai for his vision, Rahman said that he has been a huge fan of the filmmaker. The two had previously collaborated in the 2013 romantic drama “Raanjhanaa”, which also starred Dhanush in the lead.

The musical journey always starts with the director coming and engaging and saying that I want to do this crazy love story. I am a huge fan of his (Rai) work, his script, how he brings the villages to live and makes it so international that the whole world can see our culture, our joy, sorrow, hope, faith, everything. “He is a very important director in my life. Working with them, Irshad and Himanshu have been a wonderful ride,” said the Oscar-winning composer.

Rahman shared that it was during the coronavirus pandemic that the team, including lyricist Irshad Kamil, came together to make five songs. Irshad Kamil, who wrote the lyrics of “Atrangi Re”, said that Rahman would often ask him to describe a hook word for the song.

Whenever we work together, it’s not like music comes first or song, we just sit and chat, sometimes music comes first, sometimes song. He (Rahman) asks me to give a word which can be the anchor of the song, like I gave him the word ‘chaka chak’ and he did the magic,” said 50-year-old Kamil. Rai said the film’s album is about love. “Getting one word (for a song) to describe the situation and the character is a much more difficult task than writing an entire page.

The song ‘Reet Zara Si’ is the life of the film. This is the full emotional song of my film in 3-4 minutes. The album is about love, once you listen to the music you will fall in love,” he said. Kumar, who has worked with Rai for the first time, said that he immediately fell in love with the story of “Atrangi Re“. The actor said working with the filmmaker has been a fun experience.

Anand ji reminds me of my childhood. He is like a child, fights, smiles, laughs, eats. It was fun working with him and his team. I remember, within half an hour when I heard the story… my role is not that big, the whole film is of Sara and Dhanush but I wanted to be a part of it because if he can think of this story, then why? ‘Am I not a part of it,‘ he said.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series, Rai’s Color Yellow Productions and Cape of Good Films, ‘Atrangi Re‘ will release on Disney+Hotstar on December 24.
